My 61st Show
No sagging off on this Sunday show of a 3-Day run! The boys in the band are really listening to each other and playing off each other fantastically. LTGTR>

Stranger> Franklin’s are all great renditions. Jerry’s really getting into playing AND singing, as can be heard at the end of Franklin’s. Phil is sounding fine. Walkin’ Blues is strong, and Brent gets a good organ solo in. More technical issues in Ramble On Rose, the guitar this time. That’s 3 for 3 in the technical problems department for the weekend. Masterpiece gets things back on track, and Birdsong has its moments as well. 2nd set smokes. Scarlet/Fire is just as good as you’ll ever hear. Really. It’s spectacular. Jerry’s sporting the old Wolf guitar, and special things are happening. With Samson following, the setlist looks like something out of 77-78 era. Then Ship with a pretty guitar solo, and loose-yet-tight version of Women after that. More jamming and Jerry and Brent trade solos just like they rehearsed - ha ha. After drums/space, and I Will Take You Home, the boys fire it up again with a ripping Other One that jams like the early days. They Came To Play! I love Wharf Rat after TOO, and it didn’t disappoint. They close the show with Lovelight, but the fun ain’t over. The encore of Johnny B Goode> We Bid You Goodnight was EPIC. They hadn’t played those last 3 songs since 1971. I remember the end of the show like it was yesterday, and felt like I had seen the greatest 3-day run to date (at least in my show-going life). The whole weekend was soooo fun, and the band was just in a great space.

Cal Expo
I always felt that LTGTR was basically a tuning up song but to go into Stranger>Franklins was so nice. Sunday at Cal Expo was looking fine. 2nd set

Scarlet>Fire opener was well played and the post space music was wonderful. You had to be there to fully grasp the memories from Cal Expo. It seemed to mostly be all monster venues into the 90's.

play in October, or whatever. been there like 9 times it seems.I remember the shows were good and someone I know poured a used bong full of bong water onto their boyfriends head. Or was that in 88? who cares. Thanks CM I used to have an audience of this but......the 86 may show I recall was right after Chernobyl. 3 stars cause someone didn't give someone a paper at that place some other day while going home.

Scarlet Fire is really just incredible. I thought that someone had broke into my brain somehow when I heard the evenings "Lovelight", and I have never gotten over that perfect encore. Cal Expo was such an amazing venue, with a water park as well as a river with a bridge to jump from. This was the weekend wrap up show and easily the best night of the 3 nights. Super high summertime energy, the days were hot as hell and the lots were asphalt, and shakedown was on gravel. Sacramento. Jerry's birthday in August, Sun in Leo. I remember seeing Snodgrass blowing pipes from inside a van there. Ahh.. good times

Wow
I just listened to all three shows from this run and this one was easily my favorite. The other two are awesome but this one is amazing. Great Scarlet

Fire to open the second set. Women are Smarter into drums and The The Other One with healy doing his usual stuff. Johnny B Goode into Bid You Good Night for an encore. First set is not to be miised by any stretch. Lots of good Brent through the entire show. Hard to believe he was in his last year of life but what an amazing player. My suggestion is to start with the first night and listen to the whole run. It will be time well spent.

were bringing the passion and fire on this day in early August. Cal-Expo for me was always a blast, as living here in Oregon made this venue an easy turn around three day trip. (Wink.) Take care people, see many of you at Furthur, and let us all be thankful for all of these amazing shows here at archive.
